Chapter One: Truth

There comes a point in life, and it’s different for everyone, when we begin paying attention to different things in different ways.

We still notice success and failure.

They just matter differently.

We still celebrate achievement and learn from our mistakes.

They just land differently.

But somewhere along the way, our attention begins to settle on quieter things.

A conversation that stayed with us.

Because of its relevance?

A question we couldn't answer.

Was it meant to be answered?

Someone who listened longer than expected…Thank you.

A moment of silence that somehow said enough…

I do love the view from here.

These pages are not an attempt to teach you what or how to think.

They are an attempt to share what life has quietly, and sometimes not so quietly, taught me to notice.

I can't promise every observation will resonate with you.

Part of me hopes they do.

Part of me hopes they don't.

Perhaps they simply cast a little light on a path you were already walking.

I can promise you only this.

I promise to share only observations I've earned, not opinions I've borrowed.

My hope is not that you adopt my observations.

My hope is that you begin noticing your own.

For most of my life, I've made a living solving problems.

Some were complicated.

Most were urgent.

But over time, I noticed something.

The challenges that stayed with me the longest rarely had technical solutions.

They stayed with me because they involved us.

Trust. Earned and lost.

Listening. Not simply to be understood, but to understand.

Humility. It keeps me grounded and allows me to hear more clearly.

Respect. It begins with self-respect. Respect isn't an accident. It's a way of being.

Perspective. My perspective. I’m working on it…

Questions that weren't looking for answers.

Conversations that continued long after the words had ended.

…

I've come to believe the most meaningful changes in my life rarely announced themselves.

They didn't arrive with certainty.

They didn't begin with a life-changing decision.

They often began with something much smaller.

A conversation.

A question.

A moment I almost overlooked.

Looking back, I realized those ordinary moments were quietly changing the way I saw everything that followed.

Perhaps, as you read these pages, you'll remember a conversation of your own.

...perhaps you've already begun to.

If these pages do nothing more than encourage you to notice one conversation differently...

...one question more honestly...

...or one person more completely...

then they've already fulfilled their purpose.

Because everything that follows begins the same way.

I've noticed...

CHAPTER ONE

TRUTH

I've been wrong more times than I care to admit.

I've had plenty of moments when I simply didn't know the answer.

Looking back, I don't think those were the moments that cost me the truth.

People seem surprisingly comfortable with hearing,

"I don't know."

What they struggled with was wondering if I'd disappeared.

…Because I had before.

Whether I'd call back.

There were times I didn't call back. Avoiding the conversation felt easier than having it.

Whether I'd follow through.

The unfinished ones were the ones I remembered.

Whether I'd still be there after the difficult conversation had begun.

There was a time in my life when leaving felt easier than staying ...

…until I began counting what it cost.

I've noticed truth rarely arrives all at once.

Most often, it introduces itself slowly.

Trust feels like…

A promise kept.

A phone call returned.

Someone showing up when they said they would.

Or simply remaining present when there was nothing left to say.

Listening feels like...

Being given enough time to finish a thought.

Realizing someone understood what I meant instead of merely what I said.

Feeling no urgency to defend myself.

Discovering something I didn't know I believed.

Giving space to something you didn’t want to hear.

Humility feels like...

Being comfortable saying, "I don't know."

Realizing someone else saw what I couldn't.

Leaving a conversation larger than I entered it.

Respect feels like...

Being seen without being measured.

Being challenged without being diminished.

Being trusted with another person's truth.

Perspective feels like...

Standing in the same place...

...and somehow seeing farther.

Questions feel like...

Permission.

Curiosity.

Another doorway.

Humility.

Conversations feel like...

Two people leaving with more than either brought.

“Trust: I've broken enough of it to finally understand what it asks of us.”
